Coaches:

Two coaches. One way of looking.

Saddlewerkz is a small group of big-hearted coaches, passionate about encouraging every learner to overcome their fear of learning to ride, and about guiding them to appreciate safe cycling on the public paths. Our coaches are certified by SportSG and are actively engaged by MOE schools, international schools, Special Education schools and privately.

Coach:

Elise Cheng

Coach Elise has been a leisure runner for 25 years, competing since secondary school, and came to cycling through triathlon about seven years ago. Her family objected at first; she won them over. She is a mother of four, which is where her patience with beginners comes from, and she has a particular passion for guiding people through the first, frightened hour.

She has facilitated cycling programmes for ActiveSG, MOE secondary schools and special-needs schools, and coaches children and adults privately. Learners describe lessons that are structured, customised to the person in front of her, and never rushed.

Coach:

Joseph Ho

A teacher once nicknamed Coach Joseph “Sunshine boy”, and learners still meet that person. He has been cycling since the age of eight and rides almost daily: BMX, mountain bike, then triathlons and duathlons during National Service. He is a father of one teenager and coaches parents and learners together, in schools, and at community events.

Parents describe a coach who gains a child’s trust quickly, breaks a skill into bite-sized steps, and puts a nervous learner at ease with a joke. He also holds a certificate in bicycle maintenance and repair, so the bike you learn on is set up properly.

Together:

How the two coaches work.

Private lessons are one coach to one, two or a few learners; you will usually have the same coach every time, so nothing has to be re-learned about you. For school cohorts and events both coaches work the same session, so a group is split by what each learner actually needs rather than by age or class.

Both coaches teach the same Coaching Cycle and keep the same record: what was observed, what was identified, what was adapted, and what progressed. Ask either of them “why can’t they do it yet?” and you get the same kind of answer.
